Preventative Acupuncture for Stress and Sleep
Acupuncture for Stress, Sleep and Preventive Health
Traditionally, acupuncture was often used as a preventative approach to maintaining health rather than simply treating illness after it appeared.
A Traditional Approach to Health
Historically, communities in Asia would visit the local acupuncturist during seasonal changes, a time traditionally associated with shifts in the body and overall health. The practitioner’s role was not only to treat illness, but also to help people maintain balance and wellbeing throughout the year.
Seasonal Change and the Body
In Sydney, these seasonal changes may feel subtler than in parts of Asia, but they can still influence the body in different ways. Many people notice they are more likely to experience colds, fatigue, sleep disturbances, allergies or digestive issues during seasonal transitions.
This can be particularly noticeable in Sydney during periods of rapidly changing weather, such as unusually warm or humid winter days, followed by sudden storms or cooler mornings and evenings.
These environmental changes can affect people differently depending on their overall health, stress levels, sleep and constitution. The body may sometimes struggle to adapt to fluctuating temperatures and humidity, particularly during periods of stress, poor sleep or fatigue. Looking after basic things such as rest, warmth, hydration, and regular routines can help support overall well-being during these periods.
Japanese Acupuncture and Constitution
In Japanese acupuncture, treatment is aimed not only at current symptoms, but also at supporting the body’s overall balance and resilience during periods of physical or emotional stress.
Modern life also places significant demands on the body. Stress, poor sleep, long working hours and irregular eating habits can all influence physical and mental well-being over time.
Simple things such as staying warm during colder periods, improving sleep and maintaining regular eating habits are traditionally viewed as important aspects of maintaining health.
For this reason, some people choose to have regular acupuncture treatments as part of their broader health and wellness routine.
In my clinic in Marrickville, I usually recommend weekly treatments initially for around 4-6 sessions, as this generally provides a better foundation before transitioning to occasional maintenance treatments to support long-term health.
Over time, many patients report that their symptoms become less severe, less frequent and easier to manage. Following this initial phase, treatments are spaced further apart, with some patients choosing monthly treatments as part of their long-term health and wellness routine.
